Some things just go well together, right?
Like salt and pepper. Or peanut butter and jelly.
Each respective element’s amazing in and of itself. But they’re made even better when you combine the two!
I think the same logic applies to music and travel.
Life on the road’s almost always improved when you have travel songs on in the background (or via your headphones)!
Likewise, at home, few things are more effective at inspiring a sense of wanderlust than the best songs about adventure.
…Or, for that matter, at transporting you instantly back in time to past journeys when they play over the radio.
All things considered, it seems to me that music and travel go hand in hand.
And, thankfully, talented musicians of past and present have blessed our ear holes with some epic adventure songs to take with us on our trips!

1. Fly Away – Lenny Kravitz
I wish that I could fly
Into the sky
So very high
Just like a dragonfly
I’d fly above the trees
Over the seas in all degrees
To anywhere I please, oh
I want to get away
I want to fly away
Yeah, yeah, yeah
2. Born to Be Wild – Steppenwolf
Yeah, darlin’
Gonna make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
Like a true nature child
We were born
Born to be wild
We can climbed so high
I never wanna die
Born to be wild
Born to be wild
3. Send Me On My Way – Rusted Root
Well, I would like to hold my little hand
And we will run, we will, we will crawl, we will
I would like to hold my little hand
And we will run, we will, we will crawl
Send me on my way (on my way)
Send me on my way (on my way)
Send me on my way (on my way)
4. On the Road Again – Willie Nelson
And I can’t wait to get on the road again
On the road again
Goin’ places that I’ve never been
Seein’ things that I may never see again
And I can’t wait to get on the road again
On the road again
Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We’re the best of friends
Insisting that the world keep turning our way
And our way
Is on the road again
5. Have Love, Will Travel – The Sonics
Have love
Whoa, baby, will travel
I said, yeah, yeah, have love
Woah, baby, will travel
I said, if you need loving then
Mm, hmm, I’ll travel
Woah!
6. Sweet Home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd
Big wheels keep on turnin’
Carry me home to see my kin
Singin’ songs about the south-land
I miss Alabamy once again and I think it’s a sin, yes
Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama
Lord I’m comin’ home to you
7. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) – The Proclaimers
But I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door
8. Fast Car – Tracy Chapman
You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we’ll make something
Me, myself, I got nothing to prove
9. Free – Donavon Frankenreiter
We could let this love be the fading sky
Or we could drift all night until the new sunrise
Pass me a drink or maybe two
One for me and one for you
And we’ll be free
Free
Free
Free
10. Island in the Sun – Weezer
When you’re on a holiday
You can’t find the words to say
All the things that come to you
And I wanna feel it too
On an island in the sun
We’ll be playin’ and havin’ fun
And it makes me feel so fine
I can’t control my brain
11. California Dreamin’ – The Mamas & Papas
All the leaves are brown (all the leaves are brown)
And the sky is gray (and the sky is gray)
I’ve been for a walk (I’ve been for a walk)
On a winter’s day (on a winter’s day)
I’d be safe and warm (I’d be safe and warm)
If I was in LA (if I was in LA)
California dreamin’ (California dreamin’)
On such a winter’s day
12. Carry on Wayward Son – Kansas
Carry on, my wayward son
There’ll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don’t you cry no more
Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher
But I flew too high
13. Somewhere Over the Rainbow – Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole
Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
And the dreams that you dream of
Once in a lullaby, oh
Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly
And the dreams that you dream of
Dreams really do come true-ooh-ooh
14. A Horse with No Name – America
I’ve been through the desert
On a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert, you can remember your name
‘Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
15. Born to Run – Bruce Springsteen
In the day, we sweat it out on the streets
Of a runaway American dream
At night, we ride through mansions of glory
In suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on Highway 9
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected and steppin’ out over the line
Oh, baby this town rips the bones from your back
It’s a death trap, it’s a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we’re young
`Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run
Yes, girl, we were
16. The Passenger – Iggy Pop
I am the passenger
I stay under glass
I look through my window so bright
I see the stars come out tonight
I see the bright and hollow sky
Over the city’s ripped back sky
And everything looks good tonight
17. Kokomo – The Beach Boys
Aruba, Jamaica, oh I want to take you to
Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego, baby why don’t we go
Oh I want to take you down to
Kokomo, we’ll get there fast and then we’ll take it slow
That’s where we want to go, way down in Kokomo
18. Down Under – Men At Work
Traveling in a fried-out Kombi
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said:
Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder
Can’t you hear, can’t you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover
19. Africa – Toto
I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She’s coming in, 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, “Hurry boy, it’s waiting there for you”
20. I’ve Been Everywhere – Johnny Cash
I’ve been everywhere, man.
I’ve been everywhere, man.
Crossed the desert’s bare, man.
I’ve breathed the mountain air, man.
Of travel I’ve had my share, man.
I’ve been everywhere.

Listen to These Songs about Adventure
I love listening to music when I travel.
It doesn’t matter whether I’m on an epic road trip with friends, waiting around in an airport, on a long bus journey, or whatever. I’ll turn on the radio, switch on the speakers, or put my headphones on to lose myself in a travel song or two.
However, there’s no denying that listening to music on the road (or at home, for that matter) is ten times better when you’re playing particular travel songs!
Some tracks just seem purpose-written to complement the travelling experience, evoke a pulsating sense of wanderlust, or make you nostalgic for bygone trips.
Have you been searching for the best songs about adventure that tick these types of boxes? Well, I hope this list of 120 adventure songs has helped!
