What Are Affirmations?

Affirmations of any kind are basically just short statements about ourselves or the world.

They tend to revolve around changes we’d like to make in our lives and particular outcomes we’d like to attain.

As for the content itself, affirmations are almost always:

a) Framed in the present tense and

b) Positive in nature

By repeating them over and over again to ourselves, the aim is to shift our thinking and alter our underlying beliefs.

In so doing, we begin to change our habits, move toward our goals, and, ultimately, make the content of those positive affirmations a reality.

Or, in other words:

By saying something enough, we attract it into our lives.

Positive affirmations for anxiety offer a potential way to overcome this debilitating emotion.

What Are Anxiety Affirmations?

With those attributes in mind, anxiety affirmations are short statements that relate to our experience with this horrible condition.

This time, the change we’re trying to make revolves around our relationship with fear.

We want to let our apprehension and self-consciousness wash away, like water off a duck’s back. In its place, we want to feel calmer, more secure, present in the moment, and at ease regardless of the situation at hand.

Perhaps we want to feel in greater control of our emotions.

Maybe we want to feel light, happy, and carefree for a change.

…Or perhaps it’s all of the above.

Whatever the case, positive affirmations for anxiety have the potential to help.

In the next section, I’ll go into a bit more detail on how that magic happens.

Positive affirmations for anxiety may sound too good to be true. Here’s how and why they stand to help…

How do Affirmations for Fear and Anxiety Work?

We each have a voice inside our heads.

Sometimes we’re fully conscious of it; other times we’re totally unaware of it.

But the voice is always there, narrating our lives around the clock.

And, more to the point, what it says has a major impact on our experience of reality.

  • It affects how we feel
  • It affects how we think, and
  • It affects how we act

In an ideal world this inner voice would be positive, uplifting, and supportive!

Win or lose, it’d pick us up, dust us off, and hold our hand as we walk through life.

Unfortunately, though, the voice is all too often judgmental, critical, and derisive. It’s a negative influence that lacks compassion, puts us down, and tells us we aren’t worthy.

For people with anxiety, this may sound something like:

  • “I can’t do this”
  • “I’m embarrassing myself”
  • “I’m going to mess up”
  • “Everybody’s staring at me”
  • “Everyone’s going to laugh at me”
  • “I’m going to die”

What happens when those internal messages rattle around your head all the time?

You can think yourself into a hole and cause self-fulfilling prophecies to occur.

In other words, you get so anxious that you do mess up, which does make people stare, and which then confirms the underlying beliefs that fuel your inner critic.

And this is where anxiety affirmations could make an invaluable difference.

These simple statements help disrupt the patterns of negative thinking and self-talk that are causing so much trouble.

Moreover, you start believing the positive sentiments you repeat to yourself.

And what happens when our core beliefs change?

The way we think, feel, and act alters with them.

By replacing undesirable internal messages with encouraging ones, we regain control of our emotions. Neural pathways shift and positive change (in the form of anxiety relief) occurs.
